Meet Your Nourish Girl, Priya Serrao!
In conversation with our Nourish girl, Priya Serrao.
What’s your skin type?
Talk us through your morning routine?
Since I'm working from home these days, I'm usually up by 8am. I've started using an alarm to wake up in the morning instead of my phone, so I am not automatically scrolling through social media – it's the best habit I've developed in the last few weeks.
The first thing I do is head to the bathroom to brush my teeth and freshen up. In terms of skincare, I like to keep things simple - I cleanse and then wash my face with cold water to reduce any puffiness. I then apply a nourishing moisturiser (and Swisse Rose Hip Antioxidant Facial Oil if my skin is particularly dry) and finish off with a light sunscreen.
I fast until noon most days, so I usually start my day by drinking about 500ml of hot water and then making myself a tea or a black coffee. I then make a list of my top 2-3 priorities of the day. After that I usually dedicate time to catching up on my phone before getting started with work.
What’s the best natural beauty tip that you have received?
My mum loves using ingredients from the pantry to make DIY face masks. My favourite one is a mixture of honey, chickpea powder, yogurt and turmeric which brightens and soothes my skin.
Current Swisse Skincare obsession?
I absolutely love the Swisse Rose Hip Antioxidant Facial Oil. I shower before bed, so I usually apply it straight after a shower when my skin is still slightly damp so that it spreads and absorbs easily. When I wake up the next morning my skin feels super soft and hydrated. Also, it smells so fresh!
What role does wellness play in your life? How do you incorporate it into your daily routine (movement/mind/nutrition)?
I feel like the older I get the more actively I've pursued wellness because I understand how it impacts other areas of my life. Being physically and mentally healthy helps me perform better at work and generally helps me lead a good quality life. I'd say it plays a fundamental role.
Nutrition: I fast for 14-16 hours most days. I eat intuitively and don't deprive myself of any food because I think good food is one of life's pleasures. Counter-intuitively, I've noticed that when I'm fasting, I tend to make healthier choices about what I eat. I've found that this way of eating makes me feel alert and happy so it's sustainable.
Movement: My favourite forms of exercise are the ones that don't feel like exercise at all - hiking with friends, team sports and dancing are a couple of examples. Since we're at home, I incorporate body weight or kettle-bell exercises 3-4 times a week and I've found Yoga and Pilates helpful for my neck and lower back given that I spend so much time at work sitting in front of a computer.
Mind: I've found that reading books and articles and listening to podcasts about abstract ideas (e.g. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius) to be super helpful for my feelings of insecurity and anxiety. It helps put my worries into perspective and brings my focus back on things that really matter. I also write a list of things I'm grateful for every night before bed which has the same effect. Finally, I'm trying to use social media in a more mindful way by trying to produce and consume content that's insightful or entertaining rather than content that makes me feel insecure or anxious.
What does Healthy Beautiful mean to you?
I feel most beautiful when my mind is calm, and my body is strong and well-rested. I think that the phrase Healthy Beautiful captures that feeling.
What’s your Healthy Beautiful message to the Swisse Squad?
Women are often too busy to make time for self-care. As Michelle Obama says, let's put ourselves higher on our own to-do list!
Finally, who would you like to do a Swisse Skincare Mask with?
I cannot pick between Jameela Jamil or Jacinda Ardern - but I'd love to do a Swisse Skincare Mask with either one of these two powerhouse women doing amazing things in very different fields!
