Priya Serrao shares her secrets to Maintaining an Effortless Glow

Who isn't trying to achieve a natural glow? It's the enviable feeling of goodness radiating from the inside-out, giving you the confidence to take on the day and any challenges it throws your way. While we love rounding out any makeup look with a shiny highlighter or spritzing ourselves with our favourite perfume to add that extra bit of spice, feeling like you're glowing all starts from the inside.

Priya Serrao is basically the embodiment of glow — a quick scroll through her glistening Instagram feed is an insight into how positivity radiates throughout everything she does. It's hard not to be swept away by her energy.

In 2019, Priya was crowned with the title of Miss Universe Australia — an incredible feat to achieve as her first-ever dive into the modelling realm. On top of this, in 2019 she was also admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria, while simultaneously working for the Victorian Government as a policy advisor. Tackling a schedule like this is something most of us could probably only ever dream of attempting, but for Priya, the secret lies in a few things.

After chatting with the 28-year-old powerhouse, it's easy to see how she's able to maintain a confident and enthusiastic radiance, all whilst staying on top of her responsibilities. It all lies in the simple virtues of ensuring she's keeping a sense of self and skincare, all whilst placing value in helping, and fighting for the justice of others.

Here's what she had to say...

POPSUGAR Australia: Take us through the day in the life of Priya Serrao — what does it look like?

Priya Serrao: A day in my life in lockdown is pretty boring, I'll be honest! I live with my family at the moment, and I'm in a standard working from home 9-to-5 situation.

I don't have a strict routine in place, but there are a few things I like to make time for. Movement is something I like to squeeze in daily — usually a walk or a quick 30-minute workout — because I think it sets me up for the day. I also like spending a bit of time reading or listening to a podcast before bed. I find it's a great way to wind down and snap out of work-mode while also learning interesting ideas.


POP: What does it feel like to 'glow' on the inside and out to you?

PS: 'Glowing' to me means feeling at my best, right? And I feel at my best when I've had 8-to-9 hours of sleep, a chance to move during the day and have had some delicious, wholesome, nutritious food to eat. That's it. It's as simple (and as difficult) as that!

I think my close relationships are also integral to feeling my best. I honestly don't think I'd be able to function without these. I have an awesome, supportive family, and we share any troubles we're having at work or our personal lives openly. I'm also very lucky to have an amazing partner and close friends who offer so much emotional support and great constructive feedback when I need it too. I'm extremely lucky to have them.

POP: What does your morning routine involve?

PS: My morning routine has gone through several phases over the lockdown period. I was doing well in March/April and then lost a bit of motivation over Winter in June/July before getting back into things in the last few months.

As the weather's been warming up and the days are getting longer, I've slowly started getting back into finding ways to move every morning. I think going for a long walk or squeezing in a quick workout is important for me to have a clear head and to help regulate my mood for the rest of the day. Also feels good to accomplish something first thing in the morning!

POP: Take us through your morning and night skincare routine.

PS: I like to keep my skincare routine short and sweet. My morning routine starts with washing my face with water, spritzing some toner followed by an oil and a moisturiser. I've been using Swisse's Rose Hip Antioxidant Facial Oil followed by the Swisse Rose Hip Nourishing Cream Moisturiser. My skin is very dry so I love layering these products. I end with a layer of sunscreen! My nighttime routine starts with cleansing my skin (double cleansing if I've worn make-up during the day) followed by Swisse's Hyaluro-Natural® Hydration Boost Serum and a layer of the Swisse's Hemp Seed Replenishing Cream Moisturiser. I find that when I layer these products, I wake up the next morning and my skin feels super soft and hydrated.

POP: What's the one skincare product you couldn't live without?

PS: I can't pick one, sorry! I'm going to have to name two. The first is Rosehip Oil — I've tried a whole heap of different oils and serums over the last few years, and I just keep coming back to Rosehip Oil. My skin just drinks this stuff up. The second one is sunscreen — I wear it daily without fail. I've been doing this since school, so shout out to mum for getting me into this habit!

POP: How does your diet affect your skin?

PS: I think alcohol is one of the only things that affect my skin almost instantly — especially beer or cider. I've never been a big drinker and only drink wine or prosecco socially or sometimes at dinner, so I don't have to worry about it too much.

POP: Are there foods you avoid, or foods you swear by to maintain healthy skin?

I don't avoid any food — I love food too much to have the discipline to strategically avoid anything. It's such a pleasure. But I tend to stay away from beer and cider, not just for my skin but I'm also not a huge fan of the taste or that sluggish, bloated feeling the next day!

I can't say that there are specific foods I swear by, but I like eating whole foods and tend to avoid processed foods most of the time. I also just love homemade cakes, muffins and slices — biggest sucker for baked goods!

POP: Between modelling, working for the VIC government and studying, your schedule must be insanely busy. How do you set yourself up for success on days you anticipate will be challenging?

PS: Being busy works well for me because I thrive when I feel like I'm challenged and continuously engaged. I'm a notorious planner. I have a diary where I list my tasks and broader goals for the day, week and month and just break them down. I don't always meet these goals of course, but it's reassuring to break big tasks down to little achievable goals, and it's a good feeling to tick them off the list one by one. It also helps me feel like I have some sort of control over my time.

It's not always go-go-go though — as much as I enjoy the busyness, I equally enjoy slow down time to compensate for it. Rest is severely underrated in a society that prioritises being 'on' and productive all the time.

One other thing that I like doing during these slower times — and especially on challenging days — is reading stoic philosophy. My partner got me on to this, and I find it soothing when I'm feeling overwhelmed or anxious. I feel like it puts life into perspective and makes me care less about the daily, unimportant nonsense that can consume us sometimes. It's my version of meditating because I feel like it has a similar calming effect on me.

POP: What is one thing you do for yourself every day?

PS: I try to move in any way possible at least once a day. And it doesn't necessarily have to be targeted, rigorous exercise. I really like long walks while listening to music or a good podcast. I also like taking my sweet time to stretch when it's quiet in the morning and practising being aware of my environment.

POP: How do you wind down after a long day?

PS: The best feeling after a long day is taking a hot shower, getting into my oldest, baggiest pair of pyjamas and getting into bed early with a good book, podcast or my journal.
