Swisse’s Best Off Ground winner, Rod Dumesny, has been described as the “essence of Horsham Demons Football Netball Club”.
At the club from dawn to dusk, he’s often found performing any number of roles like helping in the kitchen, strapping ankles, speaking to parents, or blowing up footballs, as well as his duties as club chairman. It is said that the club would not be where it is today without the support of Rod.
We sat down with Rod to find out why his club calls him a “true gentleman” and to learn more about his beloved team, the Demons…
“I started at the Demons in 1984 as a player. I’ve been on the board for 20 years, with the last two years as chairman. I can do a trainer’s role, the administration, run the bar. I’ve literally proven my hand at just about everything. I’m quite comfortable doing anything really, and enjoy doing it too.
“I’ve got a lot of friends here. I have a passion for people achieving and doing their best, watching kids get their goals and make grand finals. And the people you meet over the time that I’ve been here, I still catch up with people – kids that came through the club 20 years ago. And that really means a lot to me.
“The club has a huge tradition. And that’s actually what keeps the club so successful is that bond of having your daughter or your son follow in the footsteps of mum and dad. It’s something that keeps us strong.
Best Off Ground
“It’s humbling to get awards like the Swisse’s Best Off Ground. The club is something I’ve put a lot of my life into, so to get recognised like this is really fantastic.”
Rod, congratulations, you are truly deserving of this award. We really believe your club is lucky to have you, but we reckon they already know that!
It was difficult to narrow down the more than 200 entries we received for this competition, as we saw so many wonderful examples of local footy off-ground heroes. We’d like to thank everyone who entered and to extend our congratulations to our superstar runners up, Ian “Skins” Shiner from Longwood Football Club and Lee Christiansen from Macedon Football Netball Club. You’re all champions.
