It’s the quadruple winter whammy – chilly outdoor temps, drying indoor heat, a comfort food diet, and dip in your water intake. Yes, it’s the magic formula for leaving your skin feeling dry, sensitive, flaky and rough.

But just like your meal prep on Sundays, all it takes for healthy and happy winter skin is a little preparation – both inside and out.

“Thirsty skin is more common in winter because we are exposed to elements such as the wind, cold and rain that affect the condition of our skin. We are probably not drinking as much water because we feel colder and tend to have beverages that may dehydrate us and counteract the hydration effects our skin needs,” explains Swisse skincare expert, Antoinette-Louise Barnado.

“Hydration is important from the inside out. Foods that contain high-water content like fruit and vegetables are important to keep us fuelled, hydrated and nourished. We should also always drink enough water in the day and interchange that with delicious herbal teas during the cold months to keep our bodies well hydrated,” she suggests.

CONCERN #1: YOUR DRY FACE

Dry heat blasting 24/7 is a primary culprit, but so are the long, hot showers you’re taking. While your first impulse is to scrub all the roughness away, stop – and follow this four-step process Barnado recommends.

  • Step 1 - Cleanse with Swisse Sweet Almond Cleanser. “This formula contains rice bran water to increase hydration, witch hazel to minimise the appearance of pores and achieve a balanced complexion, cacao butter and pomegranate fruit extract to protect from free radical damage,” says Barnado. Now that’s a multi-tasker.
     
  • Step 2 – Tone with Swisse Deep Sea Hydrating Toner. “This is a natural mist containing sea salt sourced from the Murray Darling Basin with a high mineral content,” explains Barnado. A quick spritz over your face, and you’re well on your way to toned and hydrated skin.
     
  • Step 3 – Moisturise with Swisse Argan Facial Moisturiser. “Argan Oil is rich in essential fatty acids which nourish, replenish and enhance your skin’s ability to hold moisture. Argan Oil also contains antioxidant compounds which protect the skin from environmental damage and premature ageing,” she says.
     
  • Step 4 – Finish with Swisse Argan Face Oil. “Adding a few drops will provide treatment for dehydrated skin by reducing water loss and increasing your skin’s ability to hold moisture,” Barnado says. Versatile.

 

CONCERN #2: YOUR DRY BODY

“Depending on the climate you live in, humidity levels also drop in winter, causing flaky skin because the water in our skin may evaporate quicker. We may also be exposing our skin to indoor fires and additional heating, causing it to dry out or become patchy and red,” says Barnado. Guilty?

You might want to get your hands on a dry body brush. Use it for a few minutes on your dry skin, before getting wet. Then, double up in the shower. “We recommend a good exfoliator to slough off dead and dry skin, like our Swisse Sea Salt Body Polish,” says Barnado. “It’s an oil based body polish enriched with natural plant seed oils to nourish the skin and improve texture.”

CONCERN #3: REDNESS
