How to create an anti-aging skincare routine

July 17, 2017

Aging well is a goal for all of us, isn’t it? Sure, we understand that wrinkle-free isn’t an option, but as the decades go by, we’d like to feel and look well.

As the experts tell us, the way to do this is through prevention and daily care.

“Embarking on an anti-aging routine early on is always a good idea and should contain a combination of sun protection products and an anti-aging routine, such as products that contain antioxidants, herbals and botanicals that can smooth skin and help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dark circles” says Swisse Skincare expert, Antoinette-Louise Barnado.

It’s when an appropriate skin type regime meets with a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet and plenty of toxin-flushing movement, that skin magic happens, she says.

“Aging is hereditary but how we age can be linked to environmental factors and lifestyle, like poor diet, late nights and poor sleep.”

Stress also plays a big old role and those cortisol surges will show up on your biggest organ, your skin, if not managed, Barnado warns. “Stress kicks off metabolic processes in our bodies, is responsible for free radical damage, causes inflammation and makes us worry and frown more. So minimise your stress and look years younger.”

Consider that permission to relax into a warm bath tonight with a cup of chamomile and read up on Barnado’s advice for fighting the visible signs of aging.

Fight dark circles

Because the skin around your eyes is really thin, it’s extra sensitive and susceptible to sun damage and poor circulation, explains Barnado.

“When trying to minimise the appearance of dark circles, it’s important to address some key issues, such as circulation around the eye, improving skin tone, minimising sun and environmental damage that may cause hyper-pigmentation and keeping skin tone even and supple around the eye area,” she says.

“Products that contain correcting antioxidants like resveratrol, Vitamin C and CoQ10 and vitamins like Vitamin K2 can address these issues. Caffeine and Guarana extracts work towards improving microcirculation around the eye area, reducing puffiness and toning and firming the area around the eye to smooth out fine lines,” she says. Try Swisse Argan Anti-aging Eye Cream.

Deal with pigmentation

Once pigmentation occurs, it’s difficult to reverse the visible signs, so preventing further damage and minimising the appearance is key, says Barnado.

“Exposure to ultraviolet light throughout the day can have a damaging and irreversible effect on skin cell DNA, initiating the breakdown of collagen and elastin, and suppressing skin immunity. Infra-red rays and the heat they generate penetrate the dermal layers of your skin and stimulate the production of elastin degrading enzymes, leading to a loss of skin firmness and wrinkle formation, so it’s key to cover up from any UV exposure.”

“A tinted luminous beauty balm with SPF30 can address both the appearance of uneven skin tone and protect against further UV damage and products that contain antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids will provide further protection and minimisation.”

Barnado recommends trying Swisse’s anti-aging regime:  CoQ10 day cream, Argan eye cream and Hibiscus night cream combined with the Natural Defence Moisturiser (SPF15) and Natural Defence BB creams with SPF30.

Minimise fine lines and wrinkles

They’re unavoidable, but you can minimise early onset and smooth their visible appearance, says Barnado.

“Caffeine and guarana are a great combination to increase your skin’s microcirculation.  This action can assist in plumping up the area around the eyes because it increases blood flow, giving our fines lines a little lift,” she says.

Wrinkles and fine lines can also be caused by dry, dehydrated skin so Barnado recommends drinking plenty of water and using a luxurious face cream like Swisse Hibiscus Anti-Aging Night Cream, which will help boost elasticity and suppleness. Slather us up.
